Trump trade czar Peter Navarro on Wednesday called Jerome Powell the “worst Fed chair in history.”
“All I want is a Fed chair who understands how economies work, and Powell ain’t that,” Navarro said at the Hill Nation Summit. “We’re in the endgame now for Powell.”
President Donald Trump has railed against Powell for months for not lowering the U.S. central bank’s benchmark interest rate.
On Wednesday, Bloomberg reported that Trump was likely to fire Powell soon, though the president denied the report.
“We’re not planning on doing it,” Trump said. “It’s highly unlikely.”
Powell in prior statements has said his firing is “not permitted under the law.”
Navarro told the Hill summit that the Fed is “too politicized, because a lot of folks on the board are Democrats who hate Trump.”
