FBI Director Kash Patel has delivered to members of Congress nearly 700 pages disclosing previously unknown details about Operation Crossfire Hurricane, the agency’s fruitless hunt into a connection between Russian agents and the 2016 Trump campaign. The newly released documents are expected to provide further insight into the discredited theory that President Donald Trump colluded with Russia to defeat Hillary Clinton—a claim promoted by his opponents long after it was debunked. The allegations were formally laid to rest in 2023, when Special Counsel John Durham released his yearslong investigation concluding there was no evidence of such a relationship.
Despite the findings, prominent advocates of the Russia collusion theory—such as Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA)—have continued to promote the narrative, dismissing Durham’s report as “flawed from the start” while refusing to release the evidence he has long claimed links Trump to Russia. Trump revisited the issue during a recent speech, mocking the California senator and criticizing the media for failing to acknowledge his vindication. “He knows it’s a hoax because he made it up with Crooked Hillary,” Trump said about Schiff.
The set of new documents is titled “Crossfire Hurricane Redacted Binder” and dated April 9th, 2025, the outlet reported. It follows an executive order given by Trump in March, “Immediate Declassification of Materials Related to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Crossfire Hurricane Investigation.” Trump said in announcing the order: “I have determined that all of the materials referenced in the Presidential Memorandum of January 19, 2021 … are no longer classified.”
The 2021 order, which Trump said was ignored by former President Joe Biden, referred to a binder of materials from the Crossfire Hurricane investigation that the Justice Department had delivered to Trump on December 30, 2020—just weeks before he was scheduled to leave office. “I hereby declassify the remaining materials in the binder,” Trump said on Jan. 19th, 2021. “This is my final determination under the declassification review and I have directed the Attorney General to implement the redactions proposed in the FBI’s January 17 submission and return to the White House an appropriately redacted copy.”
The 2021 memo states Trump’s wish that “the materials should be declassified to the maximum extent possible.” However, by mid-2021, the FBI responded, saying it had determined the 700 pages were part of passages in the investigation’s report “that it believed it was most crucial to keep from public disclosure.” Trump agreed to “accept the redactions proposed for continued classification by the FBI” and ordered the rest of the documents to be declassified, but that never happened.
