GOP Congressman Sparks Outrage Over Comments Targeting Rep. Ilhan Omar

Posted on July 2, 2025 By Star No Comments on GOP Congressman Sparks Outrage Over Comments Targeting Rep. Ilhan Omar

Freshman Republican Congressman Brandon Gill of Texas ignited a political firestorm this week after publicly calling for the deportation of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), a U.S. citizen and elected lawmaker, to her country of birth, Somalia.

In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Gill wrote:

“America would be a better place if @IlhanMN were deported back to Somalia,”
accompanying a video of Omar advising Somali immigrants—some of whom may be undocumented—on how to exercise their rights when approached by immigration enforcement agents.

The clip, originally posted by a conservative media figure, features Omar explaining that individuals are not obligated to disclose certain personal details during ICE interactions and should seek legal counsel. She emphasized the importance of knowing one’s rights and being prepared.

Critics of the video, including Gill, accused Omar of undermining immigration enforcement and aiding undocumented immigrants in evading deportation. “We should have never let Ilhan Omar into our country,” Gill added in a follow-up post, despite Omar having been a naturalized U.S. citizen for over two decades.

A spokesperson for Gill later told The Hill that Omar’s behavior “raises questions about to whom she is most loyal — the American people or illegal aliens from Somalia.”

Supporters of Gill’s remarks echoed similar sentiments online, accusing Omar of being “anti-American” and calling for her expulsion from Congress, despite constitutional protections and the lack of legal grounds for such action.

In response to the controversy, Rep. Omar appeared in an interview with journalist Mehdi Hasan, where she brushed off the criticism:

“These people are just idiots,” she said bluntly. “It has become really hard to have an intellectual debate with any of these people because the level of stupidity they are displaying is frankly embarrassing… not just in Congress but as Americans.”

Omar went on to criticize what she views as a growing tolerance for extreme rhetoric in American politics, saying the political environment has become increasingly hostile and intellectually shallow.

Legal analysts and political observers have pointed out that Gill’s remarks have no legal standing, as Omar is a naturalized U.S. citizen. Calls for deportation in this context are viewed by many as both inflammatory and unconstitutional, sparking concern over rising political hostility and nativist rhetoric in the public sphere.

The exchange has further highlighted the deepening partisan divides in Congress and the ongoing debate over immigration, speech rights, and the role of elected officials in informing constituents—especially within immigrant communities—of their legal protection
