Marcus Lemonis, the chief executive of Bed Bath & Beyond, has announced that the company will not open or operate new retail locations in California, citing what he describes as an overwhelming regulatory and cost burden.
Business vs. Regulation
In a statement released earlier this week, Lemonis said the decision was not political but practical.
“California has created one of the most overregulated, expensive, and risky environments for businesses in America,” he said. “It’s harder to employ people, harder to keep doors open, and harder to deliver value to customers.”
According to Lemonis, high taxes, rising wages, and a complex regulatory system make it nearly impossible for many companies to operate profitably in the state.
A Digital-First Strategy
Rather than investing in physical storefronts, Bed Bath & Beyond plans to serve California customers exclusively through online sales and rapid delivery services. The company says it will focus on same-day or next-day shipping to meet consumer demand without incurring the costs associated with brick-and-mortar stores.
“Our responsibility is to customers and shareholders,” Lemonis explained. “We won’t participate in a system that undermines both. Californians will continue to access our products — but directly through BedBathandBeyond.com, without the added expenses created by the state’s unsustainable model.”

California’s business climate has long been a subject of political and economic debate. Supporters of the state’s policies argue that labor protections and environmental standards create fairer conditions for workers and consumers, while critics contend that the rules drive companies away and increase costs for residents.
For Bed Bath & Beyond, the decision signals a commitment to the California market — but only on terms the company believes are financially sustainable.
