Today, we come together to mourn the loss of Zoe McKinney – a vibrant and compassionate 17-year-old high school senior. Zoe’s life was tragically cut short during a hiking trip with her friends, turning what should have been a day of adventure and laughter into a devastating event.
While hiking the Moab Rim Trail, Zoe slipped and fell approximately 30 feet off a steep cliff. Her friends were left in disbelief and immediately reached out for help. The Moab City Police Department, along with search and rescue teams, fire, and emergency medical services, worked tirelessly to locate Zoe and bring her to safety.
Tragically, Zoe did not survive the fall. Her time of death was later pronounced at the hospital, leaving her loved ones in unimaginable pain. Lloyd Gist, Zoe’s senior boyfriend, mourns the loss of his beloved girlfriend from afar, as he was staying with his family in Salt Lake City at the time. In a heartfelt interview with NBC News, he described Zoe as a kind and helpful person who deeply touched the lives of those around her. Their time together created cherished memories that Lloyd will hold onto forever.
A close friend of Zoe’s, Iryss Mason, spoke of her burning desire to help others. Zoe was actively working towards obtaining her EMT license, a true testament to her caring and selfless nature. In an interview with FOX affiliate KSTU, Mason remembered Zoe’s dedication to making a difference in people’s lives.
The Grand City School District, where Zoe was a student, expressed their deepest condolences to her grieving family. They assured the family of their unwavering support and arranged for on-site therapists to help students cope with their loss. Zoe will always be remembered as an outstanding student, and the school district is committed to honoring her memory throughout her senior year.
In the wake of this tragic loss, a GoFundMe campaign was created to support Zoe’s family with funeral expenses. The response was overwhelming, with the campaign raising an incredible $20,838. This outpouring of support is a testament to the love and respect Zoe commanded within her community.
