A Lifelong Passion for Music
Hailing from Lancaster, South Carolina, Maurice Williams discovered his love for music at a young age. As a teenager, he formed his first band called The Royal Charms and quickly made waves with their debut hit “Little Darlin’” in 1957. The group initially went by the name The Diamonds before Maurice renamed them Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs in 1959.

The Timeless Hit: “Stay”

In 1960, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs released their doo-wop classic, “Stay In.” This song skyrocketed to the top of the Billboard singles chart, captivating listeners with its unique charm. “Stay” holds the distinction of being the shortest-ever No. 1 song. The release of this hit on Herald Records brought the band widespread recognition, especially in the vibrant music scene of New York City.

Maurice’s Artistic Vision
Reflecting on the success of “Stay,” Maurice candidly shared his thoughts in an interview. He spoke about the band’s early struggles and how the song transformed their fortunes. Maurice initially sang the falsetto part of the song but realized the need for a stronger voice. After hearing Shane Gaston sing in Charlotte, Maurice invited him to join the group, taking the falsetto to new heights.

Leaving a Lasting Legacy

In addition to their chart-topping hit, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs released several other noteworthy songs, including “I Remember,” “May I,” “Come Along,” and “Being Without You.” Maurice’s immense talent and unwavering dedication laid the foundation for a successful career that spanned over six decades. His contributions were recognized when he was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2007, followed by his inclusion in the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame a few years later.

Celebrating an R&B Legend

Maurice Williams leaves behind a profound musical legacy and memories that will forever resonate in our hearts. His pioneering presence in the realm of rhythm and blues has made an indelible mark on the genre. As we commemorate Maurice’s incredible journey, let us cherish the beautiful music he shared with the world and forever celebrate his lasting impact on the music industry.

Rest in peace, Maurice Williams. Thank you for the music.
