A man was detained by the U.S. Secret Service on Tuesday morning after attempting to climb the wall surrounding President Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
According to reports, the man told authorities he wanted to marry Trump’s teenage granddaughter, Kai, and “spread the gospel.” Anthony Thomas Reyes, 23, was arrested early Tuesday morning by the Palm Beach Police Department after attempting to unlawfully access President Trump’s property, according to booking records from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
Reyes was initially charged with trespassing and held on a $1,000 bond, which was later increased to $50,000, according to records. Authorities indicated that federal charges may also be forthcoming. At the time of the incident, President Trump was in Washington, D.C., law enforcement officials confirmed.
“An adult male was arrested early Tuesday morning by the Palm Beach Police Department for unlawfully entering the Mar-a-Lago Club property in Florida. Shortly after midnight, the individual scaled a perimeter fence and triggered alarms,” the U.S. Secret Service told Fox News.
“U.S. Secret Service personnel detained him without incident at the scene. Palm Beach Police officers responded to the scene and took the individual into custody, charging him with occupied trespassing,” the agency added.
During his initial court appearance on Tuesday, June 3, Anthony Thomas Reyes pleaded not guilty before Judge Daliah Weiss, according to court records reviewed by the Palm Beach Daily News. The judge issued a no-contact order barring Reyes from any interaction with President Trump, Kai Trump, or any members of their family. Additionally, Reyes was ordered to stay away from all Trump-owned properties and any witnesses to the incident. He was also prohibited from possessing any weapons or firearms.
Tuesday’s incident was not Reyes’ first attempt to access Mar-A-Lago. According to the arrest report, Palm Beach Police had previously issued him a trespassing warning at the estate on New Year’s Eve . President Trump was staying at the property during that earlier incident, according to his public schedule.
